Azores (Portugal)
My 14-day Azores adventure
I went to the Azores in the end of September 2026. This trip quickly became one of my favorite travel experiences. As I love hiking, the Azores fulfilled all my wishes: incredible hiking trails, although sometimes challenging, that leave you speechless.
In 14 days, it is impossible to visit all of the Azores islands, especially since travel between islands requires a ferry or plane. Many travel guides suggest visiting no more than two islands in two weeks, but I really wanted to explore Flores, Corvo, São Jorge and São Miguel.
I carefully crafted an Azores itinerary to cover all four islands, with a brief stop in Faial. Spoiler alert: due to Hurricane Gabrielle, we ended up staying two nights on Faial! Weather conditions like hurricanes can affect inter-island travel, so planning your itinerary with some flexibility is essential.
On this page, you will find everything about the Azores: detailed travel diaries, complete itineraries, and practical travel tips to make the most of your visit. Whether you are planning your own adventure or simply curious about the islands, I hope these Azores travel guides will inspire your next trip.

What are the Azores?
The Azores is an archipelago of 9 islands in the North Atlantic, belonging to Portugal. From breathtaking landscapes and amazing surf spots to tea plantations and dramatic cliffs or hydrangeas walls, the Azores islands are full of surprises. Each island has its own unique charm and offers something different.
- São miguel: The largest and most populated island, São Miguel is the gateway to the Azores. Known as “The Green Island,” it offers crater lakes, hot springs, and lush landscapes. Most guides would advise you to stay at least 7 days on the island to discover most parts.
- Flores: A true western paradise, Flores features waterfalls, green valleys, and blooming hydrangeas. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it is ideal for nature lovers seeking peace and beauty. To reach this Island, you will need to take a plane from São Miguel, Terceira or Faial.
- Corvo: The smallest, westernmost island, Corvo is a remote escape. Walk around the giant Caldeirão crater and enjoy untouched landscapes. Ferries and private boats are leaving each day from Flores, the island also has a small airport for inter-island flights.
- São Jorge: Long and narrow, São Jorge boasts dramatic cliffs, crater lakes, and lava-formed fajãs. Less-traveled, it is perfect for hikers and cheese enthusiasts, as it is also home to the São Jorge Cheese Factory. It is part of the center islands, accessible very easily by a short ferry ride from Pico or Faial.
- Faial: Known as the Blue Island, Faial is famous for hydrangeas, Horta marina, and Capelinhos Volcano. Great for whale-watching and day trips. Also part of the center islands.
- Pico: last island in the “center islands triangle” it is home to Portugal’s highest peak, Pico combines volcanic landscapes with UNESCO-listed vineyards and excellent whale-watching.
- Terceira: Terceira blends history, culture, and lively festivals, with highlights like Angra do Heroísmo and volcanic caves.
- Graciosa: A peaceful, green island with vineyards, windmills, and geothermal springs, perfect for escaping crowds.
- Santa Maria: The sunniest and easternmost island in the Azores, Santa Maria is known for its sandy beaches, rolling hills, and relaxed atmosphere.
